A former Moi Girls High School, Nairobi, student will spend five years in jail, after she was found guilty of igniting a fire that killed 10 of her colleagues in 2017. Only referred to by her initials, T.W.G, the High Court Judge Stella Mutuku, sentenced T.W.G. to five years in jail for each of the 10 students killed, but the sentence will run concurrently, hence reducing the count from 50 years to only 5 years.

The court had vindicated T.W.G., who had committed the offence when she was 14 years , reducing the charges from murder to manslaughter. The judge was categorical that no amount of punishment would perfectly serve for the lasting impact of losing 10 lives.

Mutuku said the sentence imposed against the former student would be backdated to December 21, 2021, when the court found her guilty of the charges.
