Kiamaiko Abattoirs Ordered Closed
News
Published on 01/31/2022

National Environmental Management Authority (NEMA) has given all slaughterhouses in Kiamaiko, along Nairobi River, a directive to close, stating that the meat-processing facilities are polluting the waterway as the butchers are operating in an unhygienic manner. This gives all the abattoirs one month to relocate to a new facility located in Lucky Summer area. The slaughterhouse operators have in recent months snubbed the Lucky Summer facility, since it was launched by President Uhuru Kenyatta, arguing that they would construct their own in Njiru, along Kangundo Road, but the exercise has since stalled. Kiamaiko abattoirs handle between 300 and 400 livestock daily.
